Ginger in bread?

Not long ago I was looking through a very old cookbook on making bread and
noticed that most recipes called for a small amount of ground ginger. I've
tried it a couple of times but see no difference in the final product. Does
anyone know why it was used in the "old times"?  Dick Carlton, Brookings,
