Like Joan, I have successfully used unglazed
tiles as baking stones. I originally bought them
several years ago (and paid only about $1 each,
as I recall!) I bought enough to line the shelf of
my oven and baked homemade pizza on them,
sliding the pizza onto the stones with a pizza
paddle. I also found the warm stones were
useful wrapped in dishcloths and placed in
the bottom of the breadbasket to keep the
bread warm while serving it at the table.
