Thanks to suggestions from Greg, Andrea and Fred, I made a beautiful loaf of 
rye bread, at long last.  Adding 4 tsp. of vital wheat gluten and reducing 
the yeast by 1/2 tsp. seemed to make all the difference in the recipe I 
happened to be using.
