t is quite simple really, as all it takes is some organic (sugary) 
matter to start "going bad" and fermenting.

The simplest dough starters are made from flour and milk or some 
other liquid. I think beer is often used because it gets the 
fermentation process going quicker, and for the same reason, some 
starters use a boiled potato in place of flour.

I would think there are a number of "from scratch" bread starter 
recipes in this list's archives for you to try out. And yes, I'd love 
to share mine... if it wasn't packed away in storage, together with 
the rest of my bread making equipment :-(
