Hi Joan,

I just got a butter bell for Christmas.  I can't give advice on using it 
long term, but so far I love it!  It does keep the butter at room 
temperature, soft and spreadable.

Two things to note.  You have to change the water every 3 days, and you are 
only supposed to use it for 30 days before you discard any unused 
butter.  It holds the equivalent of one stick so I don't see this as a 
concern for my family of 5.
