Bread-Bakers v006.n074.7

I guess I am just not atuned to some of the nomenclature used in bread
making.  Just what is "sponge?"  How does it differ from ordinary dough?  Is
sourdough sponge something different?

I hate to be so ignorant on the subject, but I don't want to be to stupid to
ask.
