There's a phrase "Lazy man's pains" meaning working now to ensure the 
ability to idle later.

I readily admit that working  hard when it's not necessary strikes me as 
the height of stupidity.

Or, as the George Bernard Shaw dialogue has it,

"I believe intensely in the dignity of labour".
  "That' s because you never done any".
