I use the starter from King Arthur; it's still going strong after several years. I dried some active starter and mailed it to a friend. It took a few days after hydration and feeding, but it worked well for him. I also froze some as an experiment but have not yet tried reactivating it. Have you tried making your own starter? I found that it worked wonderfully when I lived in Texas but not in upstate NY where I live now. Hence, King Arthur to the rescue! Good luck! Ellen
